The Garrett Centre Commission: 2019 - Hari Byles and Katherine McMahon

LADA is delighted to announce that the second recipients of the annual Garrett Centre commission are performance poet Katherine McMahon and community gardener Hari Byles, who will develop a participatory project, Earthlings, responding to a number of green spaces across Bethnal Green. Hari and Katherine create participatory projects which respond to accessibility, sustainability, soil and alternative sanitation through poetry, performance and conversation.

The Garrett Centre commission is intended to contribute to LADA’s engagement with our neighbourhood, with individuals and communities in Bethnal Green, and to further our role as a Centre for Live Art. Commissioned projects explore and test ideas for new ways of working within and around the Garrett Centre, and new ways of engaging with local publics and partners.

Earthlings was chosen following an open call for proposals. Hari and Katherine say:

“We’re really excited to work with LADA and local residents, community groups and growers in Bethnal Green to strengthen connections and access to the different green spaces which surround the Garrett Centre. We are also interested to gather and share stories of the area and propose to do this through a series of creative writing workshops, culminating in a poetry treasure hunt and skill share across some of Bethnal Green’s amazing community run gardens."

Further information about the project will be forthcoming.

The 2019 commission forms part of LADA’s Restock, Rethink, Reflect 5: on Managing the Radical (2019-21)
